The Shame of Asking for Help (And Why You Deserve It)

5 min read14 Sept 2025Gurleen Kaur

Asking for help can feel awkward or even embarrassing. This blog explores why that happens and how to move past it.

There’s a tight feeling in your chest as you reach for your phone.
You type: “Hey, I’m really struggling…”
Then stare at it for 10 minutes and delete it.
Why does asking for help, something so normal, feel so heavy?

Let’s gently unpack it.

The Shame Story: “I Should Handle This Myself”

Whether you're reaching out to a friend, talking to a therapist, or asking a teacher for more time, a voice in your head might say:

“You’re just being too much.”
“Others have it worse.”
“You’ll bother them.”
“You should be able to deal with this.”

But that voice isn’t telling the truth.
It’s just a story something you picked up growing up, from the world around you, or during hard times.
Maybe someone made you feel like needing help meant you were weak.

Why Asking for Help Feels So Hard

Even though people are made to support each other, asking can still feel scary. Here’s why:

-You may have learned that being “strong” means staying quiet.
-You may have been ignored or hurt when you asked before.
-You might be scared of being judged or misunderstood.
-You might not know how to ask because no one showed you.
-Your body might react with fear or shame when you feel vulnerable.

That’s your nervous system trying to protect you, not a sign you’re broken.

The Cost of Staying Silent

You might try to smile, say “I’m fine,” and keep pushing through.
But hiding your pain doesn’t make it go away. It can make you:
-More exhausted
-More isolated
-More convinced that you have to fake it

The longer you stay quiet, the harder it feels.
You were never meant to carry pain all by yourself.

You’re Not a Burden.You’re Human.

Let’s say this clearly: You are not a burden.
You are a person with feelings, needs, and limits just like everyone else.
When you ask for help:
You’re not weak. You’re strong for reaching out.

You’re not selfish. You’re human.
You’re not failing. You’re healing.

How to Ask for Help (Even If It’s Scary)

You don’t have to say everything at once.
Here are some gentle ways to start:

-“Hey, could we talk? Things have been tough lately.”
-“I’m going through something and I don’t know how to say it, but I don’t want to deal with it alone.”
-“Can you just sit with me? I don’t need advice just company.”

Some people might not respond how you hope and that’s okay.
The right ones will listen.
And if someone doesn’t? That’s not your fault.

A Note from Venthrapy

You’re allowed to ask for help.
You’re allowed to not be okay.
You’re allowed to say, “I need someone.”
That’s not weakness, it’s letting someone in.
If no one has told you this recently:
You deserve support.

You matter.
You don’t need to be “perfect” to be loved.

Just by reading this, you’ve already done something brave.
And we’re really proud of you.
