What to Expect When You’re Starting Therapy

What to Expect When You’re Starting Therapy

5 min read14 Sept 2025Gurleen Kaur

Starting therapy can feel intimidating, but it doesn’t have to. This gentle guide walks you through what really happens in therapy and how to prepare for your first session.

Starting therapy is a powerful and courageous step. But let’s be real, it can feel overwhelming too. You might be asking yourself:
 “What do I even say?”
 “Will the therapist judge me?”
 “What if I cry?”
 “What if I don’t?”

If you’re thinking any of this, you’re not alone. People often picture therapy as a place where everything makes sense right away. In truth, it’s slower, more gentle, and deeply human.
Here’s a real and honest look at what you can expect so you don’t feel unprepared.

1. The First Session Is Just About Getting to Know Each Other

You won’t have to open up about everything on day one (unless you want to). Your therapist might ask questions like:

- Why you’re seeking therapy

- What you’ve been dealing with

- Your background, daily life, and past experiences

It’s more like laying the groundwork. You’re getting to know each other. No pressure to share everything at once.

2. You Don’t Need to Be Perfect or Have It All Figured Out

 It’s completely okay to say:

“I don’t know where to begin”

“This feels uncomfortable”

Or just sit in silence for a while.

Therapy isn’t about having the right words. It’s about being honest. It’s okay if it feels messy. That’s part of the process.

3. You Might Feel a Bit Worse Before You Feel Better

This one can be tough. Therapy can bring up old feelings you’ve been avoiding. That doesn’t mean it’s not helping. It often means it’s starting to work.
You’re finally letting out what’s been sitting inside. That release can feel uncomfortable at first, but it’s a sign of healing.

4. It’s Okay If the First Therapist Isn’t the Right Fit

Not every therapist will feel like a good match, and that’s totally normal. What matters most is feeling heard, safe, and respected.
If something feels off or you’re not connecting, it’s okay to try someone else. This is your space, and it should feel supportive.

5. Progress Can Be Quiet, But It’s Still Progress

You might not leave every session with big breakthroughs. But maybe you’ll notice:

A lighter feeling
Tears you haven’t allowed yourself before
New awareness of your thoughts or patterns
A different response in a tough situation

These small shifts are meaningful. They’re signs that something is changing.

6. You Deserve to Be Here, Just As You Are

Therapy isn’t only for people in deep crisis. It’s for anyone who feels stuck, confused, numb, or simply curious.
You don’t need to prove anything. You’re allowed to want peace, support, or clarity. That’s enough.

You’re not late to healing. You’re just getting started.
